Rebuilds /boot/grub/grub.cfg from the scripts in /etc/grub.d and the settings in /etc/default/grub. Run it after editing those files or installing a kernel so the boot menu reflects the change. GRUB is the bootloader that presents the menu and loads the kernel. On Debian systems the wrapper update-grub does the same job.
