Wake-on-LAN works by broadcasting a magic packet, six bytes of 0xFF followed by the target MAC repeated sixteen times, and this sends it to the limited broadcast address on UDP port 9. The target must have WOL enabled in its BIOS and on its NIC. Machines on another subnet need the -i directed broadcast form instead.
