The paste command merges lines, and -s serial mode treats each input file as one stream, with -d, setting the comma as the joining delimiter. The result is the whole file on a single line, one item per comma. This converts a line-per-item list into a comma-separated string for config files or SQL IN clauses. Use + instead of the comma to build arithmetic expressions.
