arp-scan blasts ARP requests at the whole local subnet and lists every device that answers, showing its IP and MAC address, plus the vendor identified from the MAC prefix. Unlike ping sweeps it finds hosts that block ICMP, making it the most reliable way to inventory a LAN. It needs root because it crafts raw packets.
